Icy Air Conditioner? What Does That Mean

This entry was posted in Air Conditioning on by .

This time of year, it’s hot by anyone’s standards. This makes it all the more striking when you notice ice on the exterior of your air conditioner. Yes, it happens, and it’s an indicator that there’s a problem that you need to address sooner than later.

Low Refrigerant

The most common cause of ice buildup on your air conditioner is a refrigerant leak within the system. This is often due to wear and tear and ongoing vibration of the unit. High winds, dust and pounding rain associated with monsoon storms can also be contributing factors.

When a refrigerant leak occurs, the temperature will drop on the coils containing the refrigerant. Condensation from the humidity in the air will then form ice on the coils. This kicks off a bad cycle of increasing ice buildup that results in your air conditioner working harder to maintain a cool temperature in your home. Over time, this can lead to the complete failure of your air conditioning system.

Clogged Filters and Coils

Refrigerant isn’t the only problem related to icing of your air conditioning unit. Those monsoon storms can also cause dirt, dust and debris to clog filters and coils, producing inefficient air flow. With reduced air flow, the outcome is the same as with low refrigerant – ice on your air conditioner.

What Should You Do?

While the sight of frost or ice on your air conditioner may initially make you think that the unit is functioning to full capacity, it’s important to know it’s a signal to call for service. Don’t wait for the situation to change. It will, but the next indicator of a problem will likely be an air conditioner that isn’t working at all.
