AC Tips for Living in the Valley of the Sun

During Arizona summers, we all learn to live with brutal heat, dangerous monsoon thunderstorms, and oppressive humidity. But that doesn’t mean that you have to struggle with the heat inside your home. To combat the heat, we have a few pro tips and tricks to help keep your home cool and comfortable throughout the hot summer months.

Keep It Running

Even with higher energy bills, relentless heat outside, and a constantly running air conditioner, it may be appealing to switch off the AC to save a bit of money. Don’t risk it as it’s better to keep your AC turned on. Consistently turning the AC on and off can absolutely cost you more hard-earned dollars because the AC unit actually has to run much longer to continue lowering the temperature inside. Use the programmable thermostat, or have one installed by our technicians, to maintain various temperature settings to keep cool and save money.

Keep It Clear

One area to keep free and clear is the outdoor AC unit. If the surrounding area is blocked by bushes, grass, weeds, branches, rocks, and other debris, it will result in restricted air flow that can cause the entire AC system to operate inefficiently and potentially cause damage to system parts.

The other area to keep clear is around room vents. Blocked indoor vents from home furnishings, carpet, boxes, or furniture will reduce the amount of cool air in the room. This causes the AC unit to stay on even longer and can eventually reduce its lifespan.

Think High Efficiency

One of the best investments in long-term savings for your home is to consider upgrading your AC unit to a high-efficiency SEER2 unit. Because we live in an area requiring air conditioning up to eight or even nine months a year, a newer unit will run quieter, keep your home cooler, save you even more money on utility bills, and take full advantage of new tax credits.

The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act provides a tax credit up to $600 per item including labor for installation. This doesn’t include other savings from state tax credits and potential product rebates. You can save up to 20% to 40% of your cooling energy costs by replacing an AC unit that’s only 10 years old with a newer, more efficient model according to Energy.gov.
