Here in the Valley, we all rely on our AC when daytime temperatures begin rising in spring. You don’t want to waste your time or energy by buying into false rumors about air conditioners. Whether myths come from your neighbor or a less than scrupulous HVAC service provider, they can hinder your ability to maximize the efficiency of your system. Our Cool Blew expert technicians want to share four common air conditioning fallacies and bust them wide open.
Myth:
Running your air conditioner lets in dust and other allergens.
Fact:
Turning on your AC will actually keep out most dust and allergens from impacting your indoor air quality. HVAC air filters, depending on the level of filtration, will filter out dirt, dust, dander, viruses, bacteria, smoke, and volatile organic chemicals from entering your home.
Myth:
Closing most AC vents will save energy.
Fact:
Closing most of your home’s AC vents will not lower your energy bills. The HVAC system is designed for the air handler or blower to move a certain amount of cool air inside your house. Closing too many vents will reduce the total amount of cool air moved by the AC blower, which reduces its working efficiency. Only close doors and vents in unused rooms.
Myth:
To cool down your home faster, you should turn the thermostat six to 10 degrees below the desired temperature until your home is cool.
Fact:
Lowering the temperature on your thermostat below your desired temperature doesn’t enable your air conditioner to work any faster. It just extends the amount of time that your air conditioner is running, which uses even more energy, and over time can result in shortening the HVAC system’s lifespan.
Myth:
It’s best to turn your air conditioner off when you’re away from home to save energy.
Fact:
When temperatures hit above 95 degrees outdoors, it can climb well into the 80s or low 90s inside your house when it’s not being cooled by an air conditioner. When the AC is turned back on, the unit will have to work longer to cool down your house. The most energy efficient solution is to raise your programmable thermostat up by six to nine degrees during the hours you’ll be away. If you have pets or heat sensitive plants or home furnishings, it’s best to not change the AC setting.
