Kitchen Catastrophes
It’s the season for corn on the cob, melon, stone fruits and barbecue ribs. All of these delicious summer foods can be devastatingly tough on your garbage disposal and pipes. Rinds, pits, bones, husks and other no-go items should always be placed in the trash. And as always, remember to avoid pouring cooking oils and grease down the drain. It’s a surefire way to cause a clog.
Toilet Turmoil
Schools out, and social distancing is still the norm. Let’s face it. Home toilets are being used more than ever. We’re seeing more backed up toilets and flooded bathrooms than ever before. Consider giving little and big household members a reminder not to overdo it on toilet paper and to be careful what they flush.
Laundry Overloads
Sweaty clothes, damp pool towels and all those bathing suits. The laundry room is a busy place from May through September. The last thing you want to deal with is a leaky washing machine hose that turns your house into a wading pool. Take a moment and inspect hoses for leaks, cracks and bulges. And, make it a best practice to stay at home when your washing machine is in use. This will enable you to address a problem quickly and, if necessary, call a professional.
Hot Water Heater Hiccups
With extra laundry and plenty of hot showers, your water heater is also working on overtime in the summer. If your water heater is ten or more years old, it’s time to call in a technician for an inspection. This will ensure everything is working as it should be and prevent any unexpected and highly disruptive situation. And, remember when it’s hot outside, the water in your pipes is heating up, too. In other words, turn down your water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or less.
