Ways to Save Money on Your Utility Bills in 2022

This entry was posted in HVAC Systems on by .

It’s a new year and a great time to implement new strategies to decrease what you spend on monthly utilities. With these five home improvements, you’ll not only be making your home more efficient in 2022, you’ll also be saving money.

Replace Your Home’s Drafty Windows

One smart fix to save on your utility bills is to replace old, single-pane glass windows with ENERGY STAR rated windows. Old windows do an inferior job of keeping out cold and excessively hot air. Upgrading to low-E double- or triple-paned window glass can save you 15% or more on annual household energy bills.

Invest in Water Efficiency

According to EPA.gov, the average family spends about $1,100 per year in water costs. You can easily save up to $420 annually by retrofitting with WaterSense labeled plumbing fixtures and ENERGY STAR certified appliances such as faucets, toilets, shower heads, and dishwashers. And you’ll also save up to 38,000 gallons of water per year, which is the amount of water needed to supply an average family for over four months.

Other Great Tips

  • Change out outdated, energy wasting classic incandescent, fluorescent, and halogen bulbs with ENERGY STAR approved light emitting diode bulbs (LEDs). LED bulb prices have dropped sharply in recent years making them more affordable. These bulbs last much longer, are more energy efficient, and utilize smart programmable technology to turn off and on according to your schedule.
  • Lower your thermostat when you leave home. Heating and cooling can account for up to 48% of home energy consumption according to the Department of Energy. Depending on the time of year, lowering or raising thermostats by seven to 10 degrees from normal settings for eight hours a day will achieve annual utility savings of up to 10%.
  • Turn off or unplug appliances. Appliances and devices off-but-ready or on standby power, continue to use energy. So-called phantom energy or vampire power, makes up about 25% of all your home energy consumption.

Holiday HVAC Gift Giving Ideas

This entry was posted in HVAC Systems on by .

The holiday shopping season is the time of year to make charitable donations, volunteer, and give thoughtful gifts to family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors. As your go-to HVAC, plumbing, and electrical professionals, we specialize in gifts that keep on giving all year long. There may be trendier gifts stashed under your tree, but possibly none will be more appreciated than gifts for year-round temperature comfort and control.

Seasonal HVAC System Check

Having an HVAC experienced technician check all the components of a system pays off when cold weather arrives in the Valley of the Sun. When timely maintenance is complete, an HVAC system will be recharged and set to warm a home, even on the coldest of nights. And it will also help maintain home comfort hour after hour, day after day throughout the year. In other words, a seasonal HVAC system tune-up service is a gift that keeps on giving!

Service Contract

When you give the gift of a service contract, you’re giving peace of mind throughout the year. Your gift recipient will get the benefit of regular tune ups, along with priority service if ever repairs are needed—even on holidays.

Smart Thermostat

We all love getting new electronic gadgets to play with. Whether it’s a new tv, smartphone, or a video gaming system, these gifts provide something that makes our daily lives entertaining. A smart thermostat is another electronic option that will benefit the entire family, making life easier, by automating routine tasks that save time and money. These thermostats are very easy to set up and use, allowing you to adjust indoor temperatures and set heating and cooling schedules whether you’re at home or away. Smart thermostats encourage consistent indoor temperatures by operating less often and using less energy. A great home investment!

Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump

Any homeowner that has converted an interior space into a home office, would love this gift. Ductless mini-split heat pumps move heat from one place to another. When using this type of heat pump, a homeowner is only paying to capture existing heat resulting in lower energy bills and creating a comfortable, warm working space.

Save Money on Your Utilities

This entry was posted in HVAC Systems on by .

Energy prices are climbing this holiday season, resulting in more expensive utility bills. With inflation the highest it has been in 30 years, you’ll likely be racking up more than a few extra dollars in electricity charges during the holidays. One way to cut costs is to implement a few energy-saving strategies.

Clear Vents

Blocked vents can result in your HVAC working harder than it needs to. It’s vitally important to make certain that no objects are blocking both inside and outside vents. You need to have at least one foot of space around vents to allow for proper airflow. Prune tree branches, pull weeds, and trim bushes blocking vents outdoors. Move furniture, objects, throw rugs, and plants blocking airspace around indoor vents.

Cook Efficiently

Appliances like air fryers, microwaves, crock pots, and toaster ovens are more energy efficient than cooktops and ranges. Using these alternative cooking methods can help save you money on your electricity bills.

Run a Full Dishwasher

Did you know that dishwashers use less water than washing by hand? Energy Star rated dishwashers use less than five gallons of water per cycle. Washing dishes in the sink can use up to 20 gallons of water. It’s best to run your dishwasher only when it’s completely full. Change your dishwasher setting to air dry instead of heat dry. The air-dry setting, called energy-saver or no-heat setting on some Energy Star Certified models, uses at least 15% less energy.

Wash on Cold

Washing your clothes in hot or warm water takes considerably more energy. Use cold water for most clothing and household items. And use hot water only for bed sheets or sanitizing baby items. Wash large loads instead of running your washing machine more frequently with smaller loads.

Dry Less

You can save additional energy by purchasing dryer balls. Not only do they dry your clothes quicker, they’ll also be fluffier and less clingy from reduced static electricity. 100% wool dryer balls are environmentally friendly, reusable hundreds to thousands of times, compostable, and highly absorbent. Use them instead of fabric softener or dryer sheets. The savings add up quickly and dryer balls may also increase the lifespan of your dryer.

Autumn Home Maintenance Checklist

This entry was posted in HVAC Systems on by .

Feel that chill in the morning air? Fall has arrived in Arizona, and there are probably at least a few tasks on your to-do list to prepare for the changing season. Here’s a short checklist of autumn chores to help prepare your house:

Gutter Clutter

Clean debris from your home’s gutters. If you’re the DIY type, you can use common items, such as a broom or even an old spatula or wooden spoon to clean gutters. Renting a power spray washer is another way to easily clean gutters, and you won’t have to climb a ladder or go on your roof. There are even gutter cleaning robots you can rent or purchase!

Chimney Sweep

On cool mornings and evenings, you may want to light up your fireplace for extra warmth. Before your first-of-the-season fire, check to make certain that your chimney is clear of debris and then test it for proper ventilation. Probably best to hire your local chimney sweeper to make a clean sweep of your chimney and fireplace.

Battery Check

Check all the batteries in your home safety devices, including smoke detectors, carbon monoxide (CO) detectors, and radon detectors. Smoke detectors running on batteries typically last for up to 10 years, CO detectors last about six years before needing replacement, and radon detectors are accurate for approximately two years.

Fire Extinguishers

Home fire extinguishers should be checked regularly to make certain they are ready to be used in case of a fire. The National Fire Protection Association recommends the following steps in your fire extinguisher inspection:

  • Ensure easy access to all your home’s fire extinguishers.
  • Check the pressure gauge to ensure the device is in the proper operating range.
  • Look for signs of physical damage.
  • Clean the outside of the fire extinguisher.
  • Replace fire extinguishers over 10 years old.
  • Check your local fire department’s website for additional resources like a home safety and evacuation plan.

Schedule a Fall Tune Up

Fall is the time to test out your home’s heating system, and more importantly, schedule a fall tune up of your HVAC system. This allows time for any necessary repairs or maintenance. Don’t wait until temperatures dip to freezing levels.

Need professional advice, maintenance, or repairs for your home? Call Cool Blew today at 623-872-2900 to schedule a visit. Our experts will gladly help you complete your fall home checklist.

Fall is Almost Here and Your HVAC System Needs to be Prepared

This entry was posted in HVAC Systems on by .

Fall is nearly here, and temperatures throughout the Phoenix area will thankfully begin to cool down soon. By mid-autumn, it may even be time to turn off the air conditioning and flip the thermostat to “heat” as morning and evening temperatures begin to drop. In other words, it’s now the perfect time to get your HVAC system ready for fall and winter months. Here are the priority areas to focus on.

Change Out Your Air Filter

Summer monsoon dust storms can wreak havoc on your HVAC system. Your air filter likely is loaded with dust, dirt, and pollen. Simply remove and dispose of your dirty air filter and replace with a clean filter. This small step takes less than two minutes and can have you and your family breathing cleaner air.

Adjust Your Thermostat

Fall means lower nighttime temperatures, a substantial drop in humidity, and a cooler home interior. Go ahead and turn your air conditioning off when daily temperatures are below 85 degrees or whatever temperature is most comfortable inside your home. You’ll notice a rapid decline in monthly energy bills versus what you encountered during the late spring and summer months. If you’re getting chilly overnight or in the mornings, you may even want to switch your thermostat to the heat setting in November.

Clean Out Debris Around Your HVAC

Even though days will be mostly sunny, you may still see rain, even a random hailstorm or high winds impacting your exterior air conditioning unit. Take a bit of time or ask your landscaping company to clear away vegetation that has grown over the summer, monsoon storm debris, tree limbs, fallen fruit from your trees, and other potential hazards that may obstruct your HVAC system’s blower and evaporator coils.

Time to Schedule Your HVAC Check Up

Just like scheduling a yearly physical with your health provider, scheduling maintenance for your HVAC system can add years of efficient cooling, heating, and your interior air quality. While many homeowners schedule an AC tune-up before summer starts, fewer homeowners take the time to schedule an autumn maintenance check to ensure the heat pump or furnace is working as it should be. This can be a costly mistake that can leave you in the cold when you need heat the most during the Valley of the Sun’s cooler months.

HVAC Tips: Ideas on Keeping Your House Cool

This entry was posted in HVAC Systems on by .

The first day of summer is just around the corner. To be exact, summer arrives with the solstice on Sunday, June 20, 2021 at 8:32 p.m. Arizona time. It’s the longest day of sunshine hours and the shortest noontime shadow of the year! With all the optimal sunlight, keeping your house cool will be a priority. Here are a few tips from the HVAC experts at Cool Blew:

1. Keep your shades, blinds, or curtains closed during the day to keep direct sunlight out of your house. Install blinds on any windows or window doors without them to reflect the sun’s heat. You can even apply reflective window tint to keep you even more comfortable and save a bit of money on your energy bills.

2. Have a flat roof? Consider painting it white. The Climate Change Research Conference advises covering your roof with any of the available reflective white paints. These paints can reflect 80-90% of sunlight and protect your roof from UV light damage.

3. Don’t over cool your house. Every degree of cooling below 78 degrees can add six to eight percent to your monthly energy bill.

4. Keep the air moving in your house. Ceiling fans and portable fans help to increase air movement which increases evaporation from your skin, making the room you’re in feeling two to three degrees cooler than it is. Remember, ceiling fans help keep you cool, so there’s no reason to leave them on if you leave the room.

5. Buy an attic fan. Attic fans can reduce the heat in your attic, as well as the entire house. These devices operate using a thermostat, so they can automatically turn on and off. There are even solar-powered attic fans. An attic fan brings the attic space to match outside temperatures instead of having attic temperatures exceeding 150 degrees. Another added bonus is your air conditioner will not need to work as hard—saving you money.

6. Plant low water-use shade trees. Shade trees help to cool your house. The placement of shade trees is the key to energy savings. Planting trees on the south side and west side of your house provides the most energy benefits.

7. Add shade screens. Did you know 50% of the heat entering you home comes through your windows? Installing shade screens on east, west, and south facing windows may qualify for shade screen rebates with APS and SRP. Shade screens protect interior furniture from sun damage, reduce cooling costs, and provide privacy.

Remembering and Honoring All Who Served this Memorial Day

This Memorial Day weekend, our entire team at Cool Blew would like to take this opportunity to honor the brave men and women of our armed forces who have sacrificed their lives to defend America’s freedom.

We appreciate you for trusting us to be your plumbing, electrical, and HVAC service provider in greater Phoenix. We know you have many companies to choose from, and we’re thankful for the opportunity to help you and your family.

We’re Here for You

With summer fast approaching, we know the busiest time of our service year is beginning to start. Service calls increase markedly during the summer when the temperatures heat up outside. Our friendly professionals have decades of experience servicing Arizona homes. We’re here to give you peace of mind that your home will be comfortable all summer long.

If you’re going away for the holiday, don’t be tempted to completely turn off your air conditioning system. Although you may want to set high, uncomfortable AC temperatures while you’re away, it’s not the best for your AC system. It will result in your air conditioner struggling to lower the temperature inside your home to a comfortable level upon your return, overworking your system.

Our Community

At Cool Blew, we’re proud to be part of this community. We understand that issues may come up at any time during the Memorial Day weekend. Please don’t hesitate to give us a call. As a locally-owned company, we’re here and ready to serve you—day or night.

Call us at 623-872-2900, 24 hours a day, if you run into any air conditioning, electrical, or plumbing issues.

HVAC Unit Recycling – What You Should Know

This entry was posted in HVAC Systems on by .

Here in the desert, we all heavily rely on cooled air to keep us comfortable for an extended part of the year. It’s hot here, and air conditioning is essential to making it livable.

With the relentless heat that we experience, our HVAC systems work hard and often need to be replaced sooner than they do in other parts of the country. With Earth Day later this month, here’s what you need to know about recycling an aging HVAC system to ensure you’re also protecting the environment and using resources wisely.

Most HVAC contractors, including Cool Blew, remove old equipment as part of the process of installing a new system. HVAC system parts can then be recycled, including steel, aluminum, copper, and brass components. No, it’s not as simple as tossing components into a recycling bin. Materials must be separated and organized by metal type. The specific components that can be recycled include:

  • Motors
  • Coils
  • Sheet metal
  • Compressors
  • Brass fittings
  • Copper tubing
  • Furnaces
  • Metal duct work
  • Cardboard boxes

The items that can’t be recycled include:

  • Fiberboard
  • Capacitors
  • Tiny plastic parts
  • Flex duct

What about Refrigerant?

Leftover refrigerant in HVAC systems must be reclaimed, so that it isn’t left to evaporate and contribute to ozone depletion. Reclamation is required by the EPA, and HVAC technicians carry licenses to do it following specific safety guidelines. Air conditioning technicians are also required to keep logs about refrigerant usage. This includes details on storing, reclaiming, and charging air conditioners with refrigerant.

3 Reasons Why You Need a Programmable Thermostat in 2021

This entry was posted in HVAC Systems on by .

Are you still using a manual thermostat that requires you to rotate a dial? If so, you could be losing out on both comfort and money. Here are three reasons why it makes real dollars and sense to make the switch to a programmable thermostat in 2021.

Reason #1 – You’ll Save Energy and Money

The single most significant benefit of installing a programmable thermostat in your home is the savings that it offers. Your energy bills will fluctuate from season to season while continuing to rise with each passing year. With a programmable thermostat, you can identify the optimal temperature for comfort and establish a temperature schedule that follows your daily routine. With less energy being used while you’re not at home or asleep, you’ll start seeing both your energy usage and your utility bills drop.

Reason #2 – Consistency

Imagine never having to crank up the air conditioning on a hot day or blast the heat on a cold winter’s morning. With a programmable thermostat, you can maintain a steady flow automatically that works with your schedule. As well, you can set up multiple “climates” in your home with the zoning feature. Each zone is programmable to further improve energy efficiency.

Reason #3 – More Control

Programmable thermostats enable you to set or reset the temperature any time of the day, from anywhere. This means that you can change the temperature while you’re at work or on vacation from any mobile device. No more running home at lunch to turn down the air conditioning or having to call a neighbor to check to see if you left on the heater. Now, that’s control!

Need another reason to consider a programmable thermostat? We’re happy to share with you their benefits, including HVAC optimization, improved system lifespan, and more. Give us a call at 623-872-2900 if you’re interested in installing a programmable thermostat or want assistance on picking the right model for your home.
